The Purpose of the Wilderness
In the Old Testament, many of us have heard preachers and teachers of the Word of God mention that this 40 year ordeal of wandering in the wilderness could have been just a few week journey, but they never go into detail of the specific purpose of the Wilderness. This 'proving ground' is where we must stay until we get right with God and then He allows us to truly possess the Promised Land.If we fast forward and look at the life of Jesus, we see that after He was baptized in the river Jordan, the Spirit of God came upon Him
It seems that Jesus could have also been referring to the land of Israel as his possession, which God had given them long ago and had been overthrown by foreign enemies. Emperor Augustus would have used the money to fund his military, for building expansion projects, and for overall imperial control. As was discussed earlier, taxation was part of a system designed to maintain the security of Pax Romana

He began to read it, and the divine power of God's Word reached into the heart of that hardened murderer on a tiny volcanic speck in the vast Pacific Ocean--and changed his life forever. How does Satan wage war?
The miracle referred to took place, without doubt, near the town of Gergesa, the modern Kersa , close by the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and hence in the country of Gergesenes. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness

Moses was his hand-picked politician and the priestly duties were delegated to Aaron, the first of a whole tribe of professional priests who were excused from labor, except for collecting money and directing the construction of impressive temples. To suggest that he could have orderly moved millions of people with donkeys, elderly, wagons, belongings and children at his beckoning call is illogical, unscientific and beyond reason
The 3 Temptations of Jesus
Was this test in the desert, Jesus' Life and Sacrifice, the way that He would correct their failure? The Israelites did not see the Promised Land, but by following through and serving God only, Jesus made the way so His people could NOW enter the Promised Land. Now why would the Spirit do that? Undoubtedly during those 40 days and nights, Jesus was praying, thinking, questioning and seeking what God wanted Him to do and undoubtedly the Holy Spirit revealed to Him what He had to do

The Temptations of Jesus in the Gospels
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. The Letter of James commends Christians who endure temptations and trials of any kind, and emphasizes that temptations do not come from God, but rather from one's own evil desires (James 1:12-14)

As many of us who made the trek to San Francisco, oftentimes from other parts of the country and the world, we had given up much: said goodbye to our often disapproving families, left our childhood homes behind, and made our way to the West Coast in the hope of discovering comradery and peace. Since the gay population cannot naturally reproduce itself, they rely on those entering the lifestyle to renew their always aging and dwindling numbers

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) - IMDb
Some people will say that he wasn't enough like Jesus, but you do have to realize that this is probably the hardest character to play and I think that Defoe did the best job that anyone could have done at playing Christ. Many people with very strong religious convictions will see this movie as offensive, simply because Christ is portrayed a frightened man who sees his fate as a burdon through 'half' of the film, and I implicate the word 'half' for a reason
That is why Jesus would cry out "IT IS FINISHED" when He was about to die on the cross.JESUS LIVED IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROSSJesus was not a stranger to death in His earthly life and ministry. Though Jesus was a man of prayer, His three rounds of spiritual battle in prayer in the garden best fits the statement of "...strong crying and tears..."Jesus was praying in the garden to be delivered from the cup
Matthew 4:1 - Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.
in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim--the one lying to the west of the Sea of Galilee, the other to the north of it; but the precise boundaries cannot now be traced out. Further, while the Lord will be the Sanctuary of such as confide in these promises and await their fulfilment, He will drive to confusion, darkness, and despair the vast multitude of the nation who despised His oracles, and, in their anxiety and distress, betook themselves to the lying oracles of the heathen
Jesus said that the destruction of Jerusalem and his second coming will happen in the generation of his disciples (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) - "This generation shall not pass until all these things happened." A Generation is 40 years in Bible. Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord? And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth
Jesus Tempted in the Wilderness. Commentary - The Fourfold Gospel
The Persians held that there were two contending deities--a good one and a bad one; and the Hebrews, according to these critics, learned this doctrine from the Persians during the days of their Babylonian captivity, and modified it so that the god of evil became the devil. The Father's voice had just declared the Sonship of Jesus, and Satan here boldly questions the truth of God's words, just as he did in the beginning ( Genesis 3:3-5 )
How much power does Satan have? - What Do The Scriptures Say?
Could that be the devil? It seems even more logical when you read a passage from I Timothy 3:6, where Paul writing to Timothy gave him there the criteria for being an elder. First of all, there are those who look at the one the Bible calls Satan or the Devil or the evil one and they see him only as a comical character, somebody dressed in a red suit with the little pointed horns and tail and carrying a pitchfork
Luke 4:2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
Let not any abuse of Scripture by Satan or by men abate our esteem, or cause us to abandon its use; but let us study it still, seek to know it, and seek our defence from it in all kinds of assaults. Christ will not worship Satan; nor, when he has the kingdoms of the world delivered to him by his Father, will he suffer any remains of the worship of the devil to continue in them
He provides a powerful scene showing Jesus in action on the Sabbath in the synagogue in Nazareth where he had been brought up, in what we are probably meant to understand as a typical instance of the preaching programme on which Jesus had now embarked. Then the universalist destiny of the new Israel could be allowed to take its course under the guidance and inspiration of the Spirit, as Luke set out to chronicle in the subsequent Acts of the Apostles
Now it is important to notice that in this account, as our Lord meets these temptations on the levels of the physical, soul and spirit, each time he used the same weapon. Now he removes all his pretenses, masks and disguises, and comes up with a direct, sheer, naked appeal to the deepest desire in the heart of mankind, placed there by God, that his life might be worthwhile

If we learnt to fly a plane the way most of us approach our relationship with God, we would focus on what we suppose to be the fun parts, give little attention to how to land, and ignore safety requirements. Once they find something that shakes you up they will keep trying it over and over relentlessly until they are absolutely convinced that their tactics will never again work with you
Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
The only important objection to this is that directly after the temptation (as seems most probable) he comes to John in "Bethany beyond Jordan," John 1:28 (not necessarily to be identified with "Bethabara" of the Received Text; its locality is quite unknown). The time when this was done was "then"; when Jesus had been baptized by John; when the Holy Ghost descended on him, and he was full of it; when he had such a testimony from his Father of his relation to him, affection for him, and delight in him; "then" was he led, "immediately", as Mark says, Mark 1:12
