Winegrape Glossary
NOTRE VIGNE: Mystery red-wine grape grown in a single Wairarapa (N.Z) region vineyard and designated as an unknown ID after examination by ampelographers and subjection to some DNA testing. Used to produce a very neutral white wine for stretching blends consisting of select varietals in order to create the so-called "jug" wines made by the bulk producers
Home Fruit Growing less common fruits
Medium size fruit, deep orange, early to ripen, mostly self-fertile; nice red and yellow fall leaves, originally selected by a Professor Meader from New Hampshire Morris Burton. The hardy kiwi is the most common of the two grown for fruit, which tend to be sweeter than the regular kiwi; the Arctic are often grown just as an ornamental for its variegated leaves
Carmenere Wine Grape Variety Information
Neither Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot gained much momentum in the region until the mid-18th Century, which raises the question of the varieties used to make Bordelais wines prior to this. A late-ripening variety, Carmenere needs high levels of sunshine and a warm summer to reach its full potential, but in the right environment it can produce fine, deeply colored red wines, with the attractive meaty plumpness of Merlot and the gently herbaceous, cedary notes of Cabernet Sauvignon
Bermuda's Flora
Avicennia nitida, otherwise Black Mangrove, is a gray-foliaged evergreen tree growing up to 40 feet high with numerous air-breathing roots growing upwards to 6 inches from the mud around the base of the trunk. Bermuda has three seasons, but some put in a fourth crop for potatoes (white or Irish and sweet, see note below), okra, tomatoes, watermelon and cantaloupes
(To view the map, your computer or other device requires Flash.) Orange or red symbols on the map indicate areas where samples contained arsenic at levels exceeding the federal limit of 10 micrograms per liter, or 10 parts per billion (ppb) for public drinking water. The EPA had proposed a 5-ppb limit in 2000, so the current limit is a compromise that came only after years of haggling over the costs of removing arsenic
Judaism 101: Kashrut: Jewish Dietary Laws
They tell you what products may be used without kosher certification, and they explain why such products can or cannot be used without kosher certification, giving complete detail about the research that went into making their determination. Why Do We Observe the Laws of Kashrut? Many modern Jews think that the laws of kashrut are simply primitive health regulations that have become obsolete with modern methods of food preparation
It is responsible for everything from bargain-priced, berry-flavored, pizza-pairing reds to the thrillingly aromatic, complex, age-worthy wines of Brunello di Montalcino. But when carefully made (and not over-oaked) it is responsible for elegant, medium-bodied reds that carry their sour-cherry and spice flavors along a line of vibrant acidity
Although there are over 10,000 documented varieties within species Vitis, about 3,500 are cultivated, yet only about 230 or so are even regionally significant in the world of wine and a mere dozen have become commercially popular and widely known to consumers. There are many methods of control and eradication, including attracting predatory raptors, trapping, poisoning, flooding and even a device that implodes burrows
Millardet's extensive experimentation led to the development of Bordeaux mixture as the first widely used chemical to protect plants from fungal infections. It is said that a farmer had applied this mixture of copper sulfate and lime to produce a chemical residue on grapes along the roadside to discourage pilfering by passersby
While PD is unlikely to become a serious problem in the near future, this could change with adaptation of both the vector and the pathogen to colder climates and introduction of susceptible cultivars. The recent identification of Xf in grapes suggests the possibility that the strain of Xf infecting woody trees was able to overcome previous grape cultivar resistance
Grape Grower's Handbook: Wine Grape Growing
To ensure that the vines are neither over, nor under watered requires constant monitoring of a number of factors including weather conditions, the amount of water stored in the soil from winter rains, the stage of development of the vines and the vineyard, the soil type(s), the irrigation system type, and its efficiency. Not adhering to an irrigation schedule may contribute to poor vine balance, excessive or poor vigor, decreased berry set, early berry dehydration, nutritional imbalances, and inconsistent yield and quality of fruit
Malbec Once important in Bordeaux and the Loire in various blends, this not-very-hardy grape has been steadily replaced by Merlot and the two Cabernets. Pinot Blanc Similar flavor and texture to Chardonnay it is used in Champagne, Burgundy, Alsace, Germany, Italy and California and can make a excellent wines
Wine Grapes
With Sauvignon Blanc, its traditional partner, make rich, honeyed wines, Semillon is relatively disease resistant, however it is susceptible to Botrytis cinerea (bunch rot). It can make a wonderful late-harvest wine, and those wineries that make it the center of their attention can make well balanced wines with complex fig, pear, tobacco and honey notes
Grape Varieties in Canada
We believe that they offer a good alternative to the standard grape types that we have such a difficult time ripening in our cool climate. We believe in working toward a unique Coastal identity. Ovino Winery in the sunny Shuswap is testing Blattner and petit milo Bacchus: is a white wine grape that was created by viticulturalist Peter Morio at the Geilweilerhof Institute for Grape Breeding in the Palatinate in 1933
Grapes and Wines of the World
Characteristics Vine The vine is not a strong grower, is prone to fungus diseases and produces well only on sites where the environmental conditions are most suited to its needs. It was first planted in Australia in Victoria and South Australia in the 1880s, but it disappeared in the 1890s except for a small area in the Great Western district of Victoria, where the variety was introduced in 1867
It is so ingrained in Italian winemaking that it is actually a sanctioned, ingredient of the blend used for (red) Chianti and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. In the days before the laws of denominazione di origine controllata, even Barolo would receive a dollop of Arneis to enhance its aroma and tame its fire
Eating them in moderation is best, given that one-quarter cup contains over 100 calories and the glycemic index rating for raisins is medium rather than low. While agricultural researchers are definitely exploring genetically modified grape varieties and while genetically engineered (GE) grapes do exist, they are very rare in the marketplace
