Do you think the end of September is a good time to go? I could also go in the middle of October or beginning of December, but I heard that December is very cloudy. I know of one Super Jeep company that offers a somewhat strange but delicious combination of Northern Lights and Lobster and my friends at Special Tours offer Northern Lights tours at sea

05 October 2005, 23:05 Hi, Can anyone advise on the best month of year (obviously during the winter season) and place to see the Northern Lights? I have read some claims that they can be seen from Reykjavik and others saying that you must fly to Akureyri
Once at your location, you should start keeping an eye on the heavens from around 9pm and keep your head craned skywards until the early hours of the morning. Auroral displays can occur throughout the year, but the best time to see the lights is in the Winter, generally November, December or January, although you can also see good displays in late autumn and early spring
Abisko, Arctic Sweden A good hundred miles into the Arctic circle lies Abisko Mountain Station, the best place in Sweden to catch more than a glimpse of the aurora borealis. Horse riding is another Icelandic pastime during the short winter days and the Icelandic horses are very sure-footed and adept at making their way over snow and ice

If you only have a very short window of opportunity to see them, you must choose a place with the highest records of geomagnetic activity, and those places are the very far north. If you just want to see auroras, it might be ok, but if you want to take pictures, they will be badly affected by the (quite severe some nights) light pollution

Re: Best Place to Stay for Northern Lights 24 November 2013, 15:48 Diane, the difference is in the number of operators that base themselves out of Reykjavik vs Selfoss, if you are going to do the driving and aurora hunting yourselves, well then it probably does not really matter where you base yourselves but if you rely on tours then it is best to be where the tours operate from. Concerning mobility and being able to travel in different directions in order to chase the auroras, Selfoss for example (or around) is also in a really good position

Also, the University of Alaska Fairbanks offers a night time viewing of the Aurora Borealis and museum visit, where one can learn the facts and related legends of the lights. The Province of Ontario offers memorable and distinctive guided tours away from the blaring yet dull city lights to the more mystical and fascinating lights that dances across the northern hemisphere
More recently I spent 2 weeks in Levi, Finnish Lapland near Kittila madly chasing the lights, only to be cursed by heavy cloud cover, rain and heavy snow for the whole time I was there, bar one night where we saw a fait glow on the horizon. Barring clouds, should it be a good time to see the Aurora? I also wanted to let you know too that I grew up in northern North Dakota and saw the lights alot growing up
When neck ache ensues try the marvellous Ice Museum which, with the help of a walk-in freezer, provides a year-round taster of the Ice Festival that takes place in mid-March and includes ice sculpting competitions open-sled dog racing down the streets. There is plenty going on when you are not northern lights viewing including are castle ruins to visit, the majestic Cuillin Mountains dominating the skyline, whisky distilleries and the hostel boasts fantastic views

Northern Lights in Lapland The countries where the area called Lapland is situated (Norway, Finland and Sweden) offer the top northern lights destinations in the world. Although there is never any guarantee of seeing the Aurora, we figure if you stay with us a few nights you have a fairly good chance of experiencing this wonderful phenomenon
So what is the best way to go about seeing the phenomenon? Here are a few things I learned while reading up on the northern lights in Iceland, seeking it out on my own, booking a tour to see it, and finally catching a glimpse. if I was going to see the northern lights, it was going to be through my corneas, not on a camera screen. After two failed viewing attempts, the tour bus bounded back toward Reykjavik
If the weather conditions are right (frosty temperatures and clear skies, visit the website of the Icelandic Meteorological Office for weather forecasts) you can even spot them from the center of town. As for restaurants in Akureyri, I recommend Fridrik V, which places an emphasis on local food, Rub 23, which is a bit more exotic, and the rooftop restaurant Strikid, which unarguably offers the best view

Similarly to Finland, you can pick up the cheapest flights to Stockholm, which is down in the south-east of the country, so it would be a case of driving or getting the train up north. Closer to Norway and the Faroe Islands than London, Shetland is half-way to the Arctic Circle, and can certainly feel pretty chilly, even when the wind is blowing from the south
