When we improvise in the key of C major, we have the chords, C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, B dim.The trick behind playing lead is to know what chords are in what key. If you were playing in the key of C major, it would be C Ionian.All major keys are constructed the same way as illustrated and once constructed, there will always be 3 major, 3 minor and 1 diminished chord for that major key

These seven chords and the seven notes that gave rise to them are collectively known as the Key, and because this particular batch came from the C Major Scale, it's known as the Key of C Major. I'll use the C major scale because there are no sharp or flat notes in it and it's less confusing to look at, but this simple rule applies to all 12 major scales

I think this is why kids are so adept at learning music, when they're told "this is the way it is, this is the rule" they just accept it, adults tend to ask "why?" and the only real answer is that's just the rule...that's what works sonically after centuries of study by masters of the craft. However, they always follow a pattern: 1 - major 2 - minor 3 - minor 4 - major 5 - major 6 - minor 7 - diminished By applying this pattern, you can quickly figure out that the chords in the key of C are: Cmaj Dmin Emin Fmaj Gmaj Amin Bdim All the notes contained in the above chords will be in the key of C

You just have to take is slow and work your way up to the speed and rhythm that best fits YOU, even if it means adding bars to the song to make it work
